Professor Do Kyoon Kim is currently leading the R&D in the field of digital twin, augmented reality, and virtual reality in the medical field at the AI Research Center at Samsung Seoul Hospital. Before joining Samsung Seoul Hospital, at Samsung electronics he led the R&D of 3D video creation and compression from 1995 to 1997, 3D graphics compression and realistic rendering from 1998 to 2002, the world first 3D (Color image + Depth image) image sensing technology and the adoption of digital 3D image international standard technology (MPEG) from 2003 to 2012, realistic virtual cloth fitting, real-time fluid simulation technology from 2013 to 2015, and the glasses-type AR HW, real-time/low-power AR SW technology, ultra-thin VR HMD, 360-degree video recording HW, and 360-degree VR video creation technology from 2016 to 2020.
During this period, he developed a total of 150 core technologies, registered a total of 390 patents, and established a total of 57 international standard technologies through international technology standardization activities (MPEG). In addition, a total of 88 technologies have been commercialized, including “Bixby Vision” in Samsung Galaxy phone and Samsung GearVR 360 camera. In recognition of these contributions, he won the 2019, 2018 Samsung Electronics Outstanding Research Achievement Award, the 2016, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 Samsung Electronics Paper Award, the 2012 Ministry of Knowledge Economy Korea Achievement Award, 2012 SID Society Distinguished Paper Award, and the 2005 Samsung Electronics Technology CEO Award. And he was designated as a 2009 Samsung Electronics Top Expert (Research Master) in AR/VR, Computer Vision, and 3D Graphics, a 2010 honorary doctorate from Samsung Electronics and a 2015 vice president and research executive.
